THE GARONNE CANAL AND THE "CANAL OF THE TWO SEAS"

Inaugurated in 1856, the Garonne canal links Toulouse to Bordeaux following the river. It extends the Midi canal which, in turn, links Toulouse to the Mediterranean. Together they form the canal of the two seas connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean and comprise 433 km (240 km on the Midi canal and 193 km on the Garonne) of a unique vista  of waterways shaded by plane trees and punctuated by locks and moored barges. The Montech canal completes the route, connecting the Tarn to the Montauban canal.

A living historical monument, the Garonne canal is at the same time a trip through history and time as it runs beside marvellous vestiges of the middle ages, whist benefiting from the engineering genius of the 20 th century. Throughout the seasons it offers the splendour of the countryside whilst also going through towns which were often ports and magnificent stops on the route.
